Just 16 years old, Homan Walsh and his kite, the “Union”, won a contest that changed the course of history. On January 30, 1848, Walsh of Niagara Falls was the first to successfully link up a light line across the Niagara River Gorge with his kite in order to build the first suspension bridge. Eventually kite line was used by engineers to pull across increasingly heavier and stronger lines until ultimately steel cables could be drawn across. After passing away in Nebraska, Mr. Walsh’s body was returned to Niagara Falls for burial in Oakwood Cemetery.
